Chapter Fifteen

The group’s nervous suspicions had settled into a nervous boredom. Eve wondered if this was what school detention was like. She didn’t know, having always been a good kid. It made her mad that she had avoided detention her entire life only to be held hostage in her own basement on suspicion of murder. What was that saying… something like, good deeds never go unpunished. She should have kicked Glen out of the hotel last night. Her meanness would have been rewarded with not being held hostage. And she might have saved Glen’s life.

Lance appeared and scanned the group before focusing on Carson. “You, upstairs” he said. Any boredom that Eve may have been experiencing was gone in an instant. She was on high alert. She assumed that Lance wanted to interrogate Carson about his interactions with Glen, but she didn’t know how the two stubborn men would react without her there to diffuse the situation.

As she watched Lance follow Carson up the stairs, Eve tried using rhythmic breathing exercises to calm herself. When that proved unsuccessful, Eve tried to preoccupy herself with visual stimulation. She looked around the room for something interesting to focus on. She landed on the colorful print of Nadine’s dress. The white dress with a pattern of alternating scenes in a watercolor style was thoroughly inappropriate attire for a basement hostage situation. It featured an outdoor café in blue with a hint of pink, a Cotswold cottage in pink with a hint of orange, and a flower shop scene in green with a hint of yellow. She distracted herself by studying the repeating pattern of the three designs looking for inconsistencies in the pattern where the colors may have not printed perfectly.

“I thought it was cute when I put it on this morning.”

Eve’s eyes shot up to Nadine’s face. She had been caught staring at the dress. “It is cute,” Eve said awkwardly.

“I feel absolutely absurd wearing it now,” continued Nadine. “I chose the wrong outfit for today. I wish I could go back in time and choose something a bit more somber. But, of course, if I could go back in time I would just leave the hotel. Or go back farther and win the lottery and spend my 25th wedding anniversary in Bora Bora. No offence.”

Eve instinctually replied, “None taken,” gave Nadine a pathetic half smile and directed her gaze elsewhere.

Eve was relieved when Carson finally returned but became even more nervous than before when she realized that Lance wanted to take Tiffany next.

“No,” said Carson. “I don’t want her alone with you.”

“Are you afraid she’s going to kill me?” said Lance.

That dumbfounded Carson. “What? No. I’m worried about her.”

“Why? I didn’t kill Glen. I’m not the murderer here, but she might be. Maybe I’ll be the one in danger.”

“She didn’t do it!” Carson said. “You’re being ridiculous. Just move on to someone else.”

“No.”

“Then let me come with her. Or someone else if you don’t trust me. I just don’t want my wife alone with you.
